true that - someone else mentioned China Doll - another of my faves.

(although, i honestly can understand how CF could end up on your list - gotta love some of the beautiful outro jams though)

so cool how musical notes and combinations strike everybody's ears differently!

Hi all,

I'm new here. It doesn't look like anyone's mentioned OMSN yet. I personally wouldn't include China Doll. It's one of those songs that, like Stella Blue or Comes A Time, always sends chills down my back. Just my $0.02.

Yep, but for me it's sorta sad...when I got the Ace album, and when my HS band friends played it at parties, it was just perfect for that sort of thing at that age, and the guitar work/build up was nice, etc.

But, jeezzz...not after this many times...and they seemed to start sleep walking thru some of the versions.

Do they even count as GD tunes?

Should have named it "Get this Song Far from Me"

or "Not Easy to Love this Tune"

There really are a lot of songs that I could "Do Without." Sometimes I skip, sometimes they cause me to search for something else on XM (the EStreet channel?). It would be cool to be able to skip a song on XM, wouldn't it?

Meanwhile, I have to say that no matter how great the version, I often skip over Truckin'.

Do Drums/Space count as a song?

Easy.
In the short song category, One More Saturday Night.
In the long song category, Terrapin.

A word about Terrapin. Jerry once said the reason they quit playing St. Stephen was it was a song that, structurally, forced you to play it the same way every time. OK- whatever. But why wouldn't that same rule apply to Terrapin? Ever have anybody try to point you towards a really hot Terrapin? 'You gotta listen to this man, this Terrapin just cooks....'

Also, a word about El Paso which has been mentioned here a few times.
I don't think it's boring, in fact the thing about El Paso that has intrigued me over the years is how sometimes Jerry takes a solo and sometimes he does not. I'm not sure I can think of another song in the repertoire where that is the case.

Hi Cliff. Just ban him then. It was done there, so I don't understand why it can't be done here. And to be more clear - I'm not sure who the hell he really is on this board. I am still just trying to feel my way around here and see if there is some actual real conversation about the GD.

And yes, you are correct. I am using a different name than DH. Purpose being is I don't want to be followed from DH. Getting overtly irritated, to say the least, about that place.

This is an unmoderated forum, for better and worse. The administration here does not monitor the forums, and it takes a great deal to have your account closed by them. Its only a matter of time before Chris will cross the line and get himself kicked out again. He has been removed from here at least a dozen times. The trouble is, he just creates a new user name and continues his bullshit.

And Libarchiver, as far as Grateful Dead and music discussion, you will find that alot more of it takes place here then at Deadhook (very little of it by Direwolf I might add). However Deadhook is a good place to go if you need information about caring for your pets...

As Tell says better than I tried, the stage banter is enjoyable, but Bobby's jokes are just bad and repetitive. If you listen to many late 60's - very early 70's concerts the repetition of Yellow Dog in particular just grates on you...or at least on me. I remember the joke making the rounds when I was in high school (68-72) and just wish Bobby picked something more enjoyable to go with.

To each his/her own. I guess I would have rather heard Alligator than heard about an alligator.

love the lyrics, the concept, the "feel" of the emotions; but the song can have a tendency to just go on and on and on and on - i usually hit skip about halfway through.

other tunes on my incomplete list:

sailor/saint
passenger
JBG
TJed
Masterpiece
Terrapin (unless it has a very cool outro jam)
Casey Jones (never like it)
IMHBTR (same thought as applicable to TLMD)

OK, to counter point Rob, I'll toss in Sunrise and SeaStones from the early years. And, sorry, a 45 minute Darkstar is just too much for me. As long as it's, say, about 20 minutes or less, I'm good.

Also, as we covered a few days ago, Terrapin has always left me flat. At it's best it was predictable and formulaic, at it's worst it was a flaming train wreck.

I am for jaunty most of the time, but sometimes am satisfied with "a spritely fashion"...

[Just in case the "word defn police" get after me, I even provide some citations for my word choice here:

jaunti·ness n.
Word History: French not only gave us hundreds of words, it sometimes gave us the same word more than once. A prime example is Old French gentil, "high-born, noble." In the early 1200s, this was borrowed into Middle English and spelled as gentile, which later developed to mean "having the character of a nobleman, courteous," and, by the 1500s, "soft, mild." After some changes in spelling, the result was Modern English gentle. French gentil was borrowed again into English at the end of the 16th century, also in the spelling gentile and meaning "well-bred, belonging to or appropriate to the gentry." In the ensuing century it came also to mean "courteous, elegant," and continues to do so today as the word genteel. Since the spelling gentile did not accurately represent the word's French pronunciation, in the 17th century some people wrote it jantee or janty. This word took on a life of its own: while it originally meant "well-bred," by the 1670s it meant "easy or unconcerned in manner," and thence "spritely, lively, brisk." Thus was born jaunty. The French gentil that spawned these words comes from Latin gentlis, which meant simply "belonging to (the same) gns or family." It is from the original Latin meaning that we get the modern word gentile, borrowed in the 14th century (again through French) meaning, essentially, "belonging to the same family as all non-Jews."]

Yeah - I know what you mean. Why just the other day he described something as being right up his southwest alley.

The man's obviously a pervert who should be hounded from the forum with pitchforks and burning torches.

as long as we are not holding our pitchforks at a jaunty angle! methinks over-exciting the beast will most assuredly prove not to be in our best interest when it comes to our dear PM

Keep Your Day Job, Don't Give It Away.... yawn.

For the umpteenth time, I post:

Hunter, in his Box of Rain, notes that

"This song was dropped from the Grateful Dead repertoire at the request of fans. Seriously."

Well, as usual I'm late on this . I find varying the years helps some burn out on songs . Also it depends my mood . For instance , Lovelight can annoy me, "Pigpen macho bullshit, all that booze , he probably couldn,t get it up" ... as one sage told me ; other times I really like it .
I sometimes just make "highlights", or"pruned" cds . What would I toss out ? Well most of the time I don't do this with pre 77 shows , though I have taken 2 71,side by side shows, tossed out the repeats to make a best of both nights .
Now with later stuff, I the show isn't stellar, I will mostly cut Bobby tunes, LL Rain, Throwing Stones, Rooster, cowboy tunes, Good Lovin( I hate the "Jimmy Buffet" style the adopted for the song ) ,unless they are particularly good .
Sometimes lame versions of Jerry tunes.
If the show is great, I keep the whole thing ( inc Samba In the Rain).
And yes Casey Jones is a "take a piss " song .

For me, El Paso = automatic skip 9 times out of 10.

Also, some of the really lame songs the band was coming up with in the Welnick era would be autoskips as well, but I hardly ever listen to shows from those years anyway...

Perhaps not so boring but disliked - Victim or the Crime

I thought I was the only one who has had it with Casey Jones. Thank you for helping me come out of the closet. Sunrise can't even be considered a Dead song can it? Please say no!

Although not songs, Bobby's horrific attempts at humorous stories (yellow dog, et al) during broken string changes make me cringe! There are times when silence is golden.

i find most of the heavy saturation of earlier El Paso's, the very one's that i believe could consume someones interest if one was knee deep in them, extremely boring myself!!!! try this one just for the hell of it http://www.archive.org/details/gd1985-06-27.mtx.seamons.92645.sbeok.flac16

Variations on this question come round fairly regularly. As our Prime Minister the correct reply should be 'I refer the Honourable Member to my earlier answer'.

I think I usually single out 'Around and around' because it seems to be on every show I own or stream.

Admittedly not as fond of Casey as I was in my youth but I never skip El Paso so long as its once of those 70s versions where Garcia's guitar just dances. I avoid having to skip Sailor/Saint and the Mydland songs by the simple expedient of not listening to anything from the 80s.

Yep--it is true there can be some fine work with those solos...another downside, though, is that it seems Bob is often requesting "sound assistance" (ie, incr volume, monitor adjustment, etc) prior to beginning, but that in spite of those efforts, it is often poorly mixed/recorded...? Not sure if that's got any real statistical support, but many seem to have more than their share of poor production issues...

Fucking ignorant, with the gun
Idyllic day, can change in hell
It´s to late, asking why?
Another piece, become a victim
Evil is hidden, unsuspected enemy
Voices from the crowd, in the name of pain

Like pigs, human race
Lust for greed, no time to change

Money, hate, pain – piece of shit
Lost their brain - piece of shit
Social shock corpse - piece of shit
Overhelming lunacy - piece of shit
